I know that continuous short runs are not good because as @bman400 put it…you get crappy oil and all that stuff needs the heat to be burned out of the oil. I do think that tighter engine tolerances and thinner oil does play a part in it though.

I've been wondering the same sort a question. I recently replaced the Air Temp Gauge on my UC with an Oil Temp Gauge. On a 93 degree day after riding an hour or so at 60 MPH, the oil temp seems to stabilize about 225 - just below the 230 mark. (I'm assuming the gauge is reasonably accurate).

Some aftermarket stores have the wrong part listed for the '99's. The coolant sensor is on the front of the circuit, and the oil temp sensor is telling you what the back of the block is seeing. The wrong t-stat will cause the coolant in the block to have a higher temp, while the coolant gauge in the dash reads normal.

The sensor is a variable resistor that gets lower in resistance as temp goes up so that is why it says signal too high - the resistance of sensor is lower so less voltage drop across sensor and therefore higher voltage applied to the controller/monitor input terminals.

I think it is mostly just a trade off of cold weather viscosity. When the weather is warm, any xw30 flows plenty good at startup but you get the "better" high temp performance. During cold winters, the thought is that you want the much better cold weather flow at a very slight degradation of high temp performance.

The clutch fan would never go full on and would not only let my oil temp get to high but my trans temp also. I have installed an electric fan set up specifically for this model truck setup. Engine oil temperature is designed to be near or above the boiling point of water to prevent condensation of blowby gasses in the crankcase. Oil to water oil coolers actually assist in quickly warming the engine oil to this temperature range. Continuous oil temperatures below 230 F are not a concern, nor are occasional spikes to 250 F.
