My Bridgeport is only a 2hp and it isn't any problem to drill a 2" hole in 4140. Another benefit is holes are more accurately sized and positioned with an annular cutter. In the mill I just hold them in a 3/4" collet most of the time but they have r8 holders as well as almost any other machine taper. I have holders for r8, mt3, mt4 and nmbt 40.

It would be nice to know I had a brand new fully functional and straight machine with warrantee at least to be sure it is all perfect. Then it would be up to me to keep it like that. No cost of repair or condition issues of an old machine. I also like the suggestion of looking at other brands of machine in same price range.

So you put the square end in your lathe 4 jaw chuck, make the end that sticks out round. Then move to the mill, hold the round end in the mill vise with V blocks or a collet block, or a spin indexer, or whatever you can figure out, mill a side of the square, and rotate as needed for the other sides.

I have owned a Rutland model 26660515 mill for about 15 years or more. I think it is the same basic mill as the 26660531, but I am not sure. They had numerous variations - power down feed, tapping setups, etc. Mine is a basic unit. I have no idea how old the mill is - I bought it used, mainly because of the variable speed drive.

When I bought my X2 size mill (Harbor Freight 44991) several years ago I also bought a Grizzly/Wood River stand and mobile base for it. It looked like a nice height for using the mill sitting down, so I bought a swivel-top stool and cut down the legs to get a nice sitting height.

My machine has all the flaws of a round column mill, but it works, and is quite strong for milling, better than the Rockwell I have. The Rockwell is a Knee mill, and superior in accurate moves, but smaller table envelope. So I tend to use the Enco more even with its limits for general stuff. It is stiffer and offers a better platform to work from.

You have a lathe and a vertical mill, those are the must have tools. Shapers, horizontal mills, line boring machines etc are interesting and have some areas where they excel so a well equipped shop may desire to have some of these other machines but a lathe and vertical mill can pretty much do it all.

I had been on the lookout for a milling machine for a garage machine shop for a while. A knee style mill was most desirable to me and I had narrowed my search down to the Taiwanese 8x30 mill. Grizzly seemed to be the only company still importing these but paying over $4K for just the mill wasn't going to happen which put me into the used market.

I'd really like to get a mill. After thinking about getting a better drill press to replace my Atlas bench-top, I looked at drill presses. Then started looking at the bench-top models from Weiss, and the WMD30 looked like it it would be a great drill press and get me started on machining.
